Mexican Mermaids

merm3

On my trip to Mexico I took two books. Both short stories, Three Messages and a Warning—a collection of fantasy Mexican tales and The Middle Stories, a grouping of equally surreal pieces of fiction by Canadian Sheila Heti. Curriously enough, both contain stories about mermaids—tragic, melancholy mermaids. In fact I’ve been seeing mermaids everywhere: wood [...]

Packing for Mexico

Oh boy, I’m feeling like a lucky girl, packing a few things for a Mexico getaway with my mama.

We’ve rented an eco beach cabana near Tulum (Mayan Riviera) and hope to fill our week with long swims, beach reads & cervezas, hikes & yoga…

Here’s my list of must packs:

  1. As few clothes as possible (mainly sun dresses)
  2. Colourful scarves
  3. Neutral bathing suit bottom & various tops
  4. iPad (for Facetiming!)
  5. Books of short stories (one Canadian, one Mexican)
  6. New-ish Aerosole walking sandals  (trying to quit flip flops, let’s see how I do)
  7. Yoga clothes
  8. The perfect canvas beach bag from here
  9. Toiletries (the earth friendly kind), like:
Avalon Organics shampoo & conditioner; Burt’s tinted lip balm; Off Botanicals insect repellant; Burt’s Bees body lotion; Aubrey Natural sunscreen; SssstingStop Insect Gel; plus a bottle opener I snagged in Hawaii & a flash light (a solar powered beach hotel may require some diy light)
  10. Trusted jean jacket
  11. Small cooler for the beach
  12. Comfy runners, Keds (only two pairs of shoes, high five!)
  13. No, she is not coming.

Oops! Forgot my  ‘serious business’ camera (Nikon D5100, Nikkor 18-200 lens), it’s coming too, so I hope to have some beauties to share with you when I get back. Adiooooos!

ps. Have you been to Tulum? Any sights or restaurants you’d recommend in the area?
